We are all experiencing high cost to maintain our hobby. What are you doing to cut cost? Do you know something that may help another fancier cut costs?
Travel for feed….Fuel and time.
Connect with another fancier(s) and work out a schedule for feed pickup. This could be a rotating type individual pickup schedule. It could also be the other fancier is willing to share the cost of the fuel used for travel if they cannot themselves pick up the feed.
I prefer the order for the feed etc; to be called in by the other fancier(s) prepaid or another way of paying for it so there is no problem obtaining the feed and other items.
This can be a major cost cutting solution, especially if you are presently traveling a long distance. Two other fanciers along with your participation can really cut fuel costs. Time is also precious and for some time is money. It is a win solution for all.
Feed cost, to include grit. (High Cost and getting higher)
Every time I go to purchase feed it has gone up and up..
I have turned to Purina Mills Layena 16% Natural no animal protein pellets. Cut cost at $6.00 a bag over grain feed of the same weight.
The majority of my birds are feeders, so the pellets work out great for the youngsters they raise
I still feed my English Short Face Tumblers premium grain with small peas.
I purchase a large amount of feed so my trips to pick up grain are not as frequent as it once was. I save at least $100.00 every six weeks by changing feeds and making larger purchases.
Vitamins and medication.
Can be expensive considering the items you may be purchasing
Contact fanciers nearby and see if they will share the cost of these items. Most of the time we end up with more than we need and it expires by date.
Nesting materials.
Low cost considering it is not a frequent purchase
Loft maintenance. Repairs.
For minor repairs it is a low cost item. When I need wood, I go to the local home stores and look for damaged or cull wood. Deals can be made for this wood.
Shipping of the Birds. (Postal).
In my opinion not inexpensive, but still a great buy.
WISCONSIN/FLORIDA
Danny Revolinsky informed me about using Purina Layena "SunFresh" Premium Brand Poultry Feed Pellets.
This is a high grade natural feed free from animal protein and fats. 16% protein.
In Florida (Tampa Bay) I pay $16.00 for a 50 lb bag at a local feed store. I save $9.00 over the 50 lb bag of grain feed I previously fed these birds
Just like any pellet, the birds have to get use to eating it. Once they have adapted, they will eat it as good a grain.
(I only feed this to my rollers and larger birds which I use to raise my Short Beak birds.)
I still feed my English SF Tumblers a mixture of grain I mix together.
I am paying for this feed at around $25 per 50lb bag.
I have now cut down on my feed and gas cost by at least $100.00 over a 6 week period.
If I knew of anyone who travels to the same 40 mile away feed store, I would be able to save even more in gas costs.
